BEYOND NOISE ISSUE NO.03 DIVES INTO THE PLAYFUL INNER WORLD OF PHOTOGRAPHER DAVID SIMS.
By Beyond Noise
British fashion photographer David Sims is known for a sort of minimalism, portraying his subjects at their core without need for bells and whistles. His career, for that reason, is far-reaching: David has shown at London’s Institute of Contemporary Art; his work is in the permanent collections of the V&A, the Getty, and the Musée de la Mode; he’s shot campaigns for Prada and Dior, and covered countless magazines including Vogue, i-D, and Dazed.
Now, David’s photographs appear in Beyond Noise’s third issue’s supplement—a dreamy collection of portraits, still lifes, details, illuminating the more playful side of the artist’s practice. In this world, dolls and humans traverse the same grounds. Equal attention is paid to the female nude, and to the softening flesh of stone fruit. The sky might be burnt orange in one frame, pale gray in the next. This portfolio is a study on emotion, and how emotion takes root in the body. It’s a playing-with reality and illusion. Ultimately, it’s a quiet sort of magic—lingering not in spectacle, but in feeling.
